period through subclinical or mild infection occurring sporadically. In order to understand how the virus infection recurs in the temperate epidemic zone, a hypothesis has been presented by Fukumi3 that the virus may survive through infections occurring sporadically in the tropical virus-reservoir zone. Several virological and epidemiological studies have been published on influenza in Thailand7•`9,11,13•`17) which is located in the tropical zone. In South-East Asian countries, a year is divided into three seasons, i.e., hot (March to June), rainy (July to October), and cool (November to February) seasons. In this paper, the outbreak of influenza in Thailand is analyzed in relation to the climatological data and a brief discussion is conducted as regards that of influenza in Manila. Fig. 1-3, shows the monthly distribution of the reported case number of influenza in Thailand from 1975 to 1980. The case number increased every year during the period of June to November, i.e., the rainy season, except the year 1978, in which the increase occurred in February. In each year, the smallest monthly case number is 10 to 29% of

A(H5N1) Virus Evolution in South East Asia
Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) H5N1 virus is an ongoing public health and socio-economic challenge, particularly in South East Asia. H5N1 is now endemic in poultry in many countries, and represents a major pandemic threat. Here, we describe the evolution of H5N1 virus in South East Asia, the reassortment events leading to high genetic diversity in the region, and factors responsible f...

متن کاملPandemic influenza H1N1 2009 in Thailand.
BACKGROUND Developing a quantitative understanding of pandemic influenza dynamics in South-East Asia is important for informing future pandemic planning. Hence, transmission dynamics of influenza A/H1N1 were determined across space and time in Thailand. METHODS Dates of symptom onset were obtained for all daily laboratory-confirmed cases of influenza A/H1N1pdm in Thailand from 3 May 2009 to 2...
متن کاملOseltamivir-resistant influenza A(H1N1) pdm09 virus: first reported case from India.
BACKGROUND Recent studies on antiviral susceptibiliy from South-East Asia, Europe and the United States have shown sporadic neuraminidase inhibitor (NAI) resistance in A(H1N1)pdm09 viruses. We undertook a study to evaluate NAI resistance in these viruses isolated in India. METHODS Pandemic influenza viruses, isolated from 2009 to 2013, along with clincal samples were genetically analysed for ...
متن کاملThe burden of influenza in East and South‐East Asia: a review of the English language literature
While human infections with avian influenza A (H5NI) viruses in Asia have prompted concerns about an influenza pandemic, the burden of human influenza in East and Southeast Asia has received far less attention. We conducted a review of English language articles on influenza in 18 countries in East and Southeast Asia published from 1980 to 2006 that were indexed on PubMed. Articles that describe...
متن کاملSwine influenza in East and South East Asia: Which strategies to early detect emergences and cross-species transmissions?
Introduction Although the first three Flu pandemics were of avian origins, the most recent human pandemic H1N1 2009 has urged scientists to play more attention on the pivotal role of pigs in the process of emerging pandemic strain [1]. Considering the lack of data related to swine influenza virus (SIV), surveillance activities need to be improved very urgently all over the world [1], especially...
